The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur was established in 1951. It was the first institution of its kind on the sub-continent. The university is located on a 2,100-acre campus based around a former detention camp (now a museum) used to incarcerate Indians involved in the revolution against the British Raj. Kharagpur lies around 115 km from Kolkata, the state capital of West Bengal. There are 9,000 students on campus, led by an academic faculty of 550. IIT Kharagpur offers undergraduate and masters degrees, doctoral programmes, MBAs and a range of options for continuing education.
